“The Invention of the Jewish People” by Shlomo Sand – a different look at things. Possibly the expulsion business is just a Phoenician method of diversion. Imagine a Phoenician bull horn announces that some Jews are being kicked out of the city or country because of their bad deeds and for bankrupting their (Phoenician) king, queen, prince, lord etc but not much actually is being done. Like today it’s just to calm down the locals (and give them free little flags to wave). Depending how big is the financial downturn the exodus is bigger or smaller. Since the Jews are in the know they migrate sooner than later, many of them migrate quite often. The myth is being maintained by the Phoenicians as the scheme worked for a very long time and for millenia. Their control of the media before print was invented was pretty low so this diversion bought Phoenician overlords some necessary time to adapt to new circumstances while some lesser Jews had to pack their bags as they were not sure if a Phoenician lord is going to spare or sacrifice them.
I disagree that they didn’t exist before the 18th century. They did exist as someone had to maintain the credit network around the known world. The credit network is accounting. Accounting existed before the more sophisticated credit network was established (cheques written in Hebrew).
